Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a graphic novel turned into a movie and a video game. As with most things Jeremy gets into, once gotten he is interested, he is interested to the nth degree. In the past week, Jeremy has read all but one of the novels, played through the video game, and we went and saw the movie.

The whole thing is this silly story of a guy named Scott Pilgrim who has to defeat the seven evil exes of a girl named Ramona Flowers in order to date her. The reason for the appeal has to do with some of the retro-chic of the graphic novel and the video game is the same way. It's a fighting game, but more in the style of an old Nintendo game with 8 bit graphics and sound.

Because of the cartoonish nature of the game, Sydney likes it a lot as well. She plays as Ramona Flowers and has learned to block really well. So she stands still and blocks and Jeremy, playing as Scott Pilgrim fights all the bad guys. After a fight, sometimes the characters need energy, so they go to various stores or restaurants to buy energy-giving items. This leads to fun conversations between the two of them like, "Come on into the store with me and I'll buy you a candy bar" or "Do you want a burrito or nachos? Nope can't have pizza, this is a Mexican food place."

It's very funny to me to see Sydney and her dad playing a video game side by side this way. But after she was done and wanted to dress like Ramona, we were reminded again of why choosing what we put in front of her is so very important. Fortunately, a hipster chick who likes to wear knee-socks with her shorts isn't a problem, but if the evil exes were a bigger part of the video game persona, it might be.

Either way, I think we have created a three year old Scott Pilgrim fan.
