In Our Hearts

On Monday, November 22, 2010, we gathered at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston. It had been exactly a year since we got that call from Kim. "They got him. They got James."

What does loss like that feel like? I felt it in my chest, my stomach, the core of my being. The stabbing pain, the sinking and falling, the emptiness inside. That's what sudden unreasonably unfair loss feels like.

That's what I learned a year ago.

Today, I learned what healing feels like.

It feels like counting your blessings.

It feels like being surrounded by people you love.

And it feels like letting go.

Rest in Peace, James. You will never be forgotten.

We will continue to honor you by living life to the fullest.
